King Harald V of Norway Dies at 89

King Harald V of Norway died Friday at age 89 after treatment for a bacterial blood infection at University Hospital Rikshospitalet in Oslo.

The Royal Court of Norway announced that King Harald V died Friday at the age of 89 at University Hospital Rikshospitalet in Oslo. He passed away following treatment for a bacterial blood infection.

His 35-year reign was defined by a shift toward modernity, most notably his 1968 marriage to Sonja Haraldsen, a commoner. This decision established a precedent for his children to marry outside the nobility. He was also widely recognized as a symbol of national unity following the 2011 far-right extremist attacks by Anders Behring Breivik.

The monarchy faced significant recent scrutiny prior to the King's death. The United States Department of Justice released documents linking Crown Princess Mette-Marit to Jeffrey Epstein. Simultaneously, the crown princess's son, Marius Borg Hoiby, was sentenced to four years in prison for rape and other crimes.
