India Expands Digital Fertilizer Management System for Subsidy Tracking

The Government of India expanded its Integrated Fertiliser Management System (iFMS) to enhance transparency and supply chain monitoring for the nation's agricultural sector. Developed by the National Informatics Centre for the Department of Fertilisers, the digital platform now manages approximately seven crore metric tonnes of annual sales and roughly Rs 2 lakh crore in subsidies.

The system currently covers over 14 crore Aadhaar-linked farmers and 2.5 lakh retailers. Recent enhancements include the Framework for Fertiliser Sale, which allows farmers to book supplies via a mobile app using QR codes. This framework integrates with the national AgriStack platform and land databases, such as Haryana's Meri Fasal Mera Byora, enabling officials to analyze fertilizer usage per hectare and identify specific gaps in farmer requirements.

To further secure the supply chain, the government introduced a Vehicle Location Tracking System (VLTS) for real-time shipment monitoring. The iFMS also now features integrated electronic processing for subsidy bills through platforms like PFMS and e-Bill. These updates aim to reduce manual handling, prevent supply shortages, and strengthen the auditability of Direct Benefit Transfer payments at national, state, and district levels.
