UK Intelligence Warns of Chinese Espionage Plot Targeting Academics
The UK Security Service issued an alert after uncovering a Chinese intelligence plot to steal technical data from over 100 academics via a front organization.
The Security Service issued its first public espionage alert after uncovering a plot by Chinese intelligence to steal technical knowledge from more than 100 UK-linked academics. The operation used the China General Technology Research Institute (CGTRI) as a front for the Ministry of State Security to covertly gather data on cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and covert communications.
Intelligence officials warned that while individual contributions may have appeared harmless, the aggregated data provides China a strategic advantage and undermines national security. The agency noted that many institutions likely engaged with CGTRI in good faith due to the organization's obfuscated links to the Ministry of State Security.
Security Minister Dan Jarvis wrote to university Vice-Chancellors demanding an immediate end to all arrangements with CGTRI to ensure compliance with the National Security Act. Academics are now advised to verify the ultimate funding sources of Chinese research collaborations to avoid inadvertently aiding foreign intelligence services.
