Obby Khan Resigns Manitoba Progressive Conservative Leadership

Obby Khan, leader of the Manitoba Opposition Progressive Conservatives, announced on September 28, 2026, that he is stepping down from his leadership role and quitting the party caucus to sit as an Independent. Khan stated that internal division and fighting within the party had taken an "intolerable toll," adding, "I will not sacrifice my principles to keep this title."

The resignation follows a period of instability within the party. On September 25, Khan survived a caucus confidence vote with 13 votes in favor and six against, with one member absent. Shortly after that vote, campaign director Stephen Carter also resigned his position.

The party has struggled with declining popularity ahead of the October 2027 provincial election. Recent polling indicates support for the Progressive Conservatives has fallen to 29%, while support for Premier Wab Kinew and the NDP has risen to 60%. Khan's departure leaves the Progressive Conservatives with 19 seats in the 57-seat legislature.
