Toyota Recalls 2,208 Urban Cruisers Over Fuel Gauge Defect

Toyota South Africa Motors is recalling 2,208 Urban Cruiser vehicles sold between January 17 and June 3, 2025, due to a manufacturing defect in the combination meter. The flaw involves an improper correction value written into the meter's memory, which may result in the fuel gauge displaying more fuel than is actually available.

Because the defect can prevent the low-fuel warning light from illuminating, motorists face an increased risk of running out of fuel unexpectedly. Such a failure may cause the engine to stall or prevent it from restarting. Of the affected vehicles, 2,015 were sold within South Africa, while 193 were exported to Namibia, Botswana, Eswatini, and Lesotho.

The National Consumer Commission is managing the recall and has urged owners to visit authorized Toyota dealerships for fuel gauge inspections. Toyota has stated that all necessary corrective work will be provided free of charge to affected consumers.
