Hungary to End Russian Gas Imports by October 2027

The Government of Hungary intends to terminate its imports of Russian gas by October 2027 to align with European Union requirements to reduce energy dependence on Russia. Minister of Economy and Energy Istvan Kapitany announced that the state is actively negotiating with neighboring countries, including Romania, and liquefied natural gas suppliers to establish alternative supply routes.

Kapitany stated that Hungary's gas supply will be secured by next October due to the availability of different sources and existing import infrastructure. However, he noted that the broader energy situation remains difficult to predict.

Prime Minister Peter Magyar, who took office in May 2026, has asserted that Hungary will seek compensation from Brussels to cover the costs associated with abandoning Russian energy resources.
