Republican-Led States Ban Student IDs for Voter Identification

Several Republican-led states have banned student IDs for voter verification, sparking lawsuits from advocacy groups who claim the measures discriminate against young voters.

Several Republican-led states have implemented or planned bans on the use of student IDs for voter identification at polling places. New Hampshire enacted a ban in June 2026, while a similar law in Indiana was reinstated by a federal appeals court in April. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed a ban that will take effect in 2027. These state-level actions align with a broader, though currently unsuccessful, push by Donald Trump to overhaul federal election voting rules.

In New Hampshire, the Coalition for Open Democracy filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court to block House Bill 323, which eliminates high school and college-issued IDs as valid identification. The nonprofit argues the law and a directive from Secretary of State David Scanlan create bureaucratic roadblocks for voters aged 18-24 who lack driver's licenses. A motion hearing is scheduled for August 31.

Supporters of these measures, including Indiana State Senator Blake Doriot and New Hampshire Representative John Sellers, argue the bans enhance election security and prevent potential fraud. Conversely, voting rights groups like the Fair Elections Center and Count US IN argue the bans are unconstitutional. A federal judge previously described Indiana's ban as a "solution in search of a problem," noting a lack of evidence regarding widespread voter fraud involving student IDs, though that ruling remains under review.
