Harvard Endowment Hits $68 Billion Amid Federal Funding Cuts
Harvard University reported a record $68 billion endowment while implementing hiring freezes to offset a 20 percent drop in federal research funding.
Harvard University reported its endowment grew to approximately $68 billion, an $11 billion increase resulting from a 27 percent return on investments. Despite this record wealth, the institution is facing significant financial pressure following a 20 percent decline in federally sponsored research funding during fiscal 2026.
This funding slump stems from a broader conflict with the Trump administration, which attempted to freeze research grants and block international students. While Harvard successfully challenged these moves in court, appeals remain pending. To offset the federal cuts and previous operating losses, the university implemented a hiring freeze and job cuts.
University leadership noted that litigation costs and federal pressure tactics continue to create headwinds. In response, the Harvard Chan School of Public Health is seeking private foundations and corporate sponsors to underwrite research that was previously funded by the government.
