HSBC to Launch AI Institute in Hong Kong
HSBC will open an artificial intelligence and emerging technology institute in Hong Kong by early 2027 to drive technological transformation.
HSBC will establish an artificial intelligence and emerging technology institute in Hong Kong, scheduled to launch in the first quarter of 2027. Chief Executive Georges Elhedery announced the initiative during Hong Kong’s Fintech Week, identifying the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology as the anchor academic partner.
The bank plans to eventually relocate the center to the Northern Metropolis, a mega project bordering mainland China. This move follows a July announcement to hire more than 100 AI specialists for a similar center in Singapore. HSBC is currently rolling out AI training for its global workforce of approximately 200,000 employees.
The expansion occurs as the broader banking sector implements AI-driven overhauls that have led to significant job cuts. Eddie Yue, chief executive of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, noted that roughly 80% of banks in Hong Kong are currently adopting AI or generative AI.
