Aliko Dangote Pledges $10 Billion for African Power Sector

Aliko Dangote announced a $10 billion investment to address Africa's electricity deficit, potentially redirecting funds from the group's steel business to finance the projects.

Aliko Dangote, President of Dangote Group, announced plans to invest more than $10 billion in Africa's power sector over the next three to four years. Speaking in an interview with Al Jazeera, Dangote stated the investment aims to address a chronic electricity deficit that leaves over 600 million Africans without access to power.

To fund these energy projects, the Dangote Group may cancel or redirect capital from other proposed ventures, specifically mentioning the steel business. Dangote characterized reliable electricity as the essential backbone for industrial activity and economic transformation, asserting that power is growth.

Dangote suggested that delivering reliable power would fundamentally change the political landscape, noting that leaders who provide electricity to their citizens would face less need to campaign extensively during elections.
