Jane Street Petitions Tribunal to Access Sebi Trading Data

Jane Street has asked the Securities Appellate Tribunal to compel Sebi to release trading records used to support market manipulation allegations in India.

Jane Street Capital has petitioned the Securities Appellate Tribunal to compel the Securities and Exchange Board of India to release the trading records used to support allegations of market manipulation. The US-based hedge fund seeks access to data regarding counterparties, timing, and pricing to contest a July 2025 ex parte interim order.

That order barred the firm from the Indian securities market and required the disgorgement of ₹4,843 crore in alleged unlawful gains. The regulator claims the firm manipulated Bank Nifty constituents in cash and futures markets to artificially support the index while holding short positions in index options.

Jane Street argues the allegations cannot be properly tested without the requested data. The firm noted that two separate reviews conducted in 2024 by the National Stock Exchange and Sebi's Integrated Surveillance Department found no evidence that its trades influenced index prices.
