UK Launches Summer Savings Scheme With Free Youth Bus Travel

The Government of the United Kingdom launched the Great British Summer Savings scheme to reduce financial pressures on families during the school summer holidays. The initiative provides free bus travel for children aged five to 15 on most local buses across England throughout August.

Managed by the Department for Transport, the program extends beyond transit to include VAT cuts on children's meals at restaurants, theater and cinema tickets, and admission fees for family attractions. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander stated the measures provide families "room to breathe from the cost-of-living squeeze."

Alongside the summer initiative, the government announced a permanent reduction in the general bus fare cap, lowering it from £3 to £2 for all passengers starting next year. Alexander noted that the cap will help all passengers reach their destinations for less.
