Toyota Unveils 1.5-Liter Hybrid Engine and Multi-Pathway Platform
Toyota developed a modular 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine and a unified vehicle platform to improve hybrid fuel economy by over 15 percent.
Toyota has announced a next-generation hybrid powertrain centered on a new modular 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine family. Developed from the ground up as a single integrated system with hybrid hardware and power electronics, the engine is available in both naturally aspirated and turbocharged versions. It is designed to replace existing 1.8-liter four-cylinder and 1.5-liter three-cylinder units.
The automaker targets a fuel economy improvement of more than 15 percent compared to current systems used in the RAV4 and Corolla. This efficiency gain is driven by reduced mechanical friction, improved thermal management, lower electrical losses via silicon carbide power electronics, and enhanced vehicle aerodynamics.
This powertrain is built for a new multi-pathway platform that supports battery-electric, plug-in hybrid, and hybrid vehicles on a common architecture. This design allows hybrid models to share the same basic structure as electric vehicles without compromising interior space. Toyota revealed that the 13th-generation Corolla, expected for the 2028 model year, will be among the first to utilize this multi-energy platform to reduce production costs.
Toyota intends to ensure the system is compatible with renewable and carbon-neutral fuels. Additionally, the company plans to expand external sales of this technology to other automakers.
