UK Mortgage Rates Rise to 5.59 Percent in August

Moneyfacts reports average mortgage rates rose to 5.59 percent in August, erasing June reductions while overall product availability continued to grow.

Average new mortgage rates rose in July, erasing the reductions seen in the previous month. Analysis by Moneyfacts Group shows the average rate reached 5.59 percent by the start of August, an increase of 0.12 percentage points from July and a return to June levels.

Finance expert Rachel Springall attributed this volatility to fluctuations in swap rates driven by persistent concerns over interest rate outlooks and conflict in the Middle East. The rapid re-pricing by lenders reduced the average shelf life of mortgage products to 11 days at the start of August, down from 14 days in July and the lowest level since April.

Despite the rate instability, overall product availability increased for a fourth consecutive month. There were 7,357 products available in August, compared to 7,177 in July.
