Chinese Yuan Hits Strongest Level Since 2022
The Chinese yuan reached its strongest level since July 2022 after China reported 4.5 percent economic growth in the third quarter.
The Chinese yuan reached its strongest level since July 2022, trading at approximately 6.68 per dollar. The currency appreciation follows the release of economic data showing China's economy grew 4.5 percent year-on-year in the July-September quarter, a figure that exceeded market expectations and featured accelerated retail sales in September.
This growth has reduced immediate concerns that the government would need additional stimulus to meet annual targets. The rise of the yuan was further supported by a weakening US dollar and a strong Chinese trade surplus. Despite the market trend, the People's Bank of China set the daily midpoint at 6.7208 per dollar.
Analysts suggest that further appreciation may be limited by the interest rate differential between China and the United States. Investors are currently monitoring a financial forum in Beijing for remarks from the governor of the central bank and the head of the State Administration of Foreign Exchange regarding currency management and monetary policy.
