Google Counts Android Backup Data Toward Account Storage Limit
Google updated its storage policy to include Android system backups, such as SMS and call logs, within the 15GB Google Account storage quota.
Google updated its storage policy on July 7, 2026, to include all Android backup data in the total Google Account storage cap. Previously, the company only counted media uploaded to Google Photos and photos or videos within MMS data toward the limit. Under the new rules, SMS messages, call history, contact information, device settings, and installed app data now compete for space with Gmail and Google Drive.
The change takes effect immediately for new users setting up backups for the first time, while existing users will be transitioned gradually over the coming months. Google estimates the addition will average approximately 40MB per user and suggests this will not significantly impact most people's available space. However, users nearing their 15GB limit may be forced to delete files or purchase a paid Google One storage plan to maintain full backups.
To mitigate the impact, the company is introducing granular backup controls. These new settings allow users to toggle specific data types or individual apps on and off. This update follows a May policy change that tested reducing the default free storage limit for new accounts from 15GB to 5GB for users without a linked phone number.
