Pakistan Deploys Military Assets to Saudi Arabia Under Secret Pact

The Government of Pakistan deployed thousands of troops and fighter jets to Saudi Arabia following Iranian strikes, activating a confidential mutual defense agreement.

The Government of Pakistan deployed a combat-capable military force to Saudi Arabia's King Abdulaziz Air Base in April 2026, following Iranian missile and drone strikes on Saudi energy infrastructure. The deployment, consisting of 8,000 to 13,000 soldiers, approximately 16 JF-17 fighter jets, two drone squadrons, and a Chinese HQ-9 air defense system, was executed under a secret Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement signed in September 2025.

The deployment followed a period of tension in March 2026, when Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud summoned Pakistani leadership to Jeddah after Pakistan initially declined to provide active military support, citing domestic sectarian tensions and conflict with the Taliban. Despite this initial hesitation, the pact was activated, with Defence Minister Khawaja Asif implying the agreement potentially places Saudi Arabia under Pakistan's nuclear umbrella.

This military alignment occurred as Pakistan attempted to maintain a role as a neutral mediator in the regional conflict. While brokering a six-week ceasefire between Washington and Tehran, Pakistan also sought approximately $5 billion in financial aid from Saudi Arabia and Qatar to manage urgent debt repayments. The military move coincides with reports of unpublicized Saudi retaliatory strikes inside Iran and a failed attempt to broker a broader ceasefire between the United States and Iran involving U.S. Vice President JD Vance.
