Mastercard Labels India's UPI as Complementary Market Enabler

Mastercard executive Gautam Aggarwal describes India's Unified Payments Interface as a growth driver that complements the company's digital payment services.

Gautam Aggarwal, Mastercard's Division President for South Asia, characterized India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) as a complementary enabler rather than a competitor. Speaking at the 3rd India International FinTech Festival 2026, Aggarwal stated that UPI accelerated digital payment adoption by increasing consumer education and expanding the overall market, which in turn created a foundation for Mastercard's growth.

Aggarwal acknowledged that while India is the world's largest digital payments ecosystem in absolute terms, relative penetration remains low, suggesting significant headroom for future industry growth. He praised India's regulatory framework for digital payments as being among the best in the world.

To support this growth, Aggarwal emphasized Mastercard's long-term investments in cybersecurity to combat fraud and money laundering. He noted that the company maintains a balance between security and user convenience through a combination of internal innovation and strategic company acquisitions.
