Tesla Expands Unsupervised Robotaxi Service Across Austin Metro Area

Tesla Inc. expanded its unsupervised robotaxi service to cover the entire Austin metropolitan area on June 3, 2026. The rollout includes the Austin-Bergstrom Airport, Gigafactory Texas, the I-35 highway, and suburbs such as Manor and Pflugerville, marking the company's fifth geofence expansion in the region. The company also removed onboard safety monitors from these vehicles, offering fully driverless rides.

Fleet size reports vary, with some independent trackers citing as few as 20 to 42 vehicles, while city officials estimate around 50. This scale trails Waymo, which operates between 250 and 300 vehicles in Austin. This deployment follows previous April 2026 launches in Dallas and Houston.

CEO Elon Musk has tied broader U.S. scaling to an architectural overhaul of Full Self-Driving software (FSD v15) targeted for late 2026 or early 2027. Meanwhile, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has requested detailed fleet and safety data by June 19, specifically citing concerns regarding crashes during periods of reduced visibility.
