INEC to Deploy 1.4 Million NYSC Corps Members for 2027 Elections
INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan announced the mobilization of over 1.4 million NYSC corps members for Nigeria's 2027 general elections during a visit to NYSC headquarters in Abuja.
Joash Amupitan, Chairman of Nigeria's Independent National Electoral Commission, announced that over 1.4 million National Youth Service Corps members will be deployed for the 2027 general elections, declaring that INEC cannot conduct elections without them. Amupitan detailed the figures during a courtesy visit to NYSC Director-General Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu at the scheme's Abuja headquarters on May 11, 2026. The deployment includes 707,384 corps members for the Presidential and National Assembly elections on January 16, 2027, and another 707,384 for the Governorship and State Assembly elections on February 6, 2027, totaling 1,414,768. An additional 52,446 corps members will support off-cycle governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun states and bye-elections in Nasarawa, Enugu, Rivers, Ondo, Kebbi, and Kano states.
The 2027 figure represents a significant increase from the approximately 1.2 million ad hoc staff deployed in 2023, over 70% of whom were corps members. Amupitan emphasized that corps members are indispensable for their neutrality, patriotism, and digital proficiency, particularly in operating the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System. He also pledged improved insurance and welfare packages for deployed corps members. Nafiu reaffirmed NYSC's commitment to supporting INEC, noting that incoming Gen Z corps members' digital skills would further strengthen the commission's technology-driven election operations.
