Alaska Finalizes General Election Field for Governor and Senate

Alaska's general election field is nearly finalized following primary results from 401 of 403 precincts. In the race for governor, Bernadette Wilson, a conservative media personality and waste management company owner, secured a spot alongside Republican Dave Bronson and Democrats Tom Begich and Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins. Wilson is campaigning on promises to block new taxes, reduce government spending, and pay a full dividend from the state's oil fund. She is also supporting a ballot measure to abolish the state's open-primary and ranked-choice voting systems.

The U.S. Senate race will be a four-way contest featuring incumbent Republican Dan S. Sullivan, Democrat Mary Peltola, Republican Gerald Heikes, and Daniel J. Sullivan Jr. The candidacy of Daniel J. Sullivan Jr., a retired teacher, was challenged by the National Republican Senatorial Committee and the Alaska Division of Elections over eligibility and party affiliation. However, the Supreme Court of Alaska ruled to return him to the ballot without a party affiliation.

Allies of Senator Sullivan have described the namesake challenger's candidacy as a Democratic scheme to confuse voters, a claim Peltola denies. Former Anchorage Mayor Daniel A. Sullivan endorsed the incumbent senator to clarify the distinction for voters. Meanwhile, Peltola is focusing her campaign on affordability and local issues. In the U.S. House race, incumbent Republican Nick Begich will face Republican Bill Hill and Democrats Matt Schultz and Eric Hafner. The Alaska Division of Elections expects to release final results by August 31.
