X Launches Completely Rebuilt Android App to Match iOS Performance

X released a ground-up rebuild of its Android application to eliminate performance gaps with iOS and enable faster feature deployment.

The social media platform X released a completely rebuilt Android application on July 20, 2026, after nearly a year of development. Rather than applying incremental updates, the company rewrote the app from the ground up using modern programming languages to resolve historical performance gaps with the iOS version, specifically targeting loading times, scrolling stability, and notification handling.

Nikita Bier, head of product at X, described the rebuild as one of the largest engineering projects in the company's history. The new architecture allows the platform to deploy features more rapidly, with some tools expected to debut on Android before iOS. The update introduces an interface for pinning tabs to favorite topics, faster loading for external links, and deeper integration of digital payment services and advanced messaging.

The strategic shift follows a surge in Android downloads in October 2025 and aims to increase user retention in global markets. While the core app is available on the Google Play Store, the company is still optimizing performance for low-end devices. Planned future updates include a video editor, video reactions, cashtags, and support for the live audio feature, Spaces.
