National Highways Closes A40 for Bridge Refurbishment

National Highways closed the A40 near Gloucester for overnight bridge repairs as part of a 7 million pound refurbishment project.

National Highways closed the A40 in both directions from 8 p.m. on October 19 to 6 a.m. on October 20 to perform planned works on the A40 Over Bridge near Gloucester. The overnight closure allowed for specific repairs on the bridge, which spans the River Severn and serves as a critical link between Gloucester, Cheltenham, and Ross-on-Wye.

This work is part of a 7 million pound refurbishment project that began in June 2026 and is scheduled to continue until March 2027. The comprehensive project includes concrete repairs, resurfacing, new waterproofing, improved drainage, and upgraded street lighting.

During the closure, motorists followed a signed diversion via the A417, A449, and A40. Following the reopening of the road on Tuesday, traffic management transitioned to a contraflow system on the eastbound carriageway of the bridge.
