Qatar Coordinates Regional Support for Pakistan-Led US-Iran Mediation
Qatar's Prime Minister led a series of diplomatic calls with regional and global powers to support Pakistan-led mediation between the United States and Iran.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, Qatar's Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, conducted a series of high-level diplomatic calls between May 22 and May 23, 2026, to build international support for Pakistan-led mediation between the United States and Iran. He coordinated with officials from Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, and the United Kingdom to emphasize the necessity of a sustainable agreement to prevent regional escalation.
During these discussions, Sheikh Mohammed urged all parties to engage constructively to address the root causes of the regional crisis through peaceful dialogue. In a separate call with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, the Prime Minister reviewed efforts toward a comprehensive agreement and warned against using the Strait of Hormuz as a "pressure card," asserting that freedom of navigation is a non-negotiable principle.
Other diplomatic engagements included a call with Japan's Foreign Minister Motegi Toshimitsu, who focused on maintaining the ceasefire and the release of a Japanese national. The broader coordinated effort involving the Government of Pakistan as the lead mediator aims to reinforce security and stability across the region by facilitating a diplomatic resolution between Washington and Tehran.
