INEC Outlines 2027 Election Timeline and Neutrality Mandates

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has established the timeline for the 2027 general elections, scheduling Presidential and National Assembly polls for January 16 and Governorship and State House of Assembly elections for February 6. To support these operations, the commission announced that the collection of newly printed Permanent Voter Cards will begin on October 9, 2026.

During a national tour of six zones, INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan conducted readiness assessments in Zazzau and Kaduna. Amupitan warned staff that administrative negligence and compromised ethics would not be tolerated, stating that electoral credibility depends on the faithful implementation of the law by field officials. The commission has implemented a zero-failure approach to logistics, increased state office overheads by 150 percent, and introduced a new salary structure to strengthen operational systems.

Simultaneously, civic and religious leaders have pressured the commission to maintain independence. In Abuja, Cardinal John Onaiyekan and the Council of the Wise, led by former Chief Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, urged INEC to avoid undue pressure and called on security agencies to maintain professionalism. Onaiyekan noted that Nigerian elections have not improved significantly since 1999, while Ariwoola urged political candidates to avoid hate speech to ensure the 2027 cycle is peaceful and transparent.
