Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur Jaamac Elected Somali House Speaker
Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur Jaamac won the election for speaker of the House of the People in Mogadishu amid allegations of foreign influence and political tension.
Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur Jaamac won the election for speaker of the House of the People on Monday in Mogadishu, securing 142 votes to defeat candidate Abdulkadir Omar Maalim, who received 30 votes. The former minister of ports and maritime transport assumed the role while the legislature operates in a caretaker capacity following the expiration of its four-year term in April 2026.
The election process faced criticism from opposition figures who alleged that Nur obtained his parliamentary seat through force and outside legal channels. Further claims surfaced suggesting that the Government of Turkey and Villa Somalia supported Nur's candidacy.
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud congratulated the new speaker after the results were announced by Acting Speaker Sadia Yasin Haji Samatar. Mohamud urged Nur to lead the House with transparency and to prioritize the state-building process and national unity.
