OpenAI Launches Legal Software Integrations to Target Law Firms

OpenAI is integrating ChatGPT with third-party legal software to automate contract negotiation and database searches for law firms.

OpenAI is expanding its footprint in the legal industry by launching new integrations with third-party legal software companies. These updates will enable lawyers to search legal databases, update files, and negotiate contracts directly within the ChatGPT interface.

The strategy aims to address growing client pressure on law firms to automate routine tasks and reduce billable hours for work that software can now perform. To lead this push, the company hired Jason Boehmig, the founder of Ironclad, to oversee software sales to legal professionals.

This move places OpenAI in direct competition with Google and Anthropic, both of which have begun selling AI products specifically packaged for legal departments and law firms. While ChatGPT is currently the most widely used AI tool among lawyers, OpenAI must still address industry-wide concerns regarding data confidentiality, precision, and the risk of chatbots hallucinating legal cases.
