Suzuki Launches e SKY Electric Kei Car to Rival BYD
Suzuki announced the e SKY electric kei car for November release, pricing it to undercut competitors from BYD and Nissan Motor.
Suzuki announced the launch of the e SKY, its first electric kei car, which is scheduled for sale in November. The ultra-compact vehicle features a battery range of 310km and a base price of ¥2.1 million. After federal subsidies, the cost drops to approximately ¥1.6 million, a price point designed to undercut the Nissan Motor Sakura EV and the Racco from Chinese manufacturer BYD Company.
Chief engineer Tomoyuki Tsubata stated that the company developed the vehicle to convince kei drivers to shift to an EV. Suzuki targets monthly sales of 1,000 units as it attempts to lower the barrier for Japanese consumers transitioning from gasoline vehicles to electric ones.
The move intensifies competition in the Japanese kei car market. While Japanese brands currently control about 80% of sales, the recent entry of BYD with its own affordable electric mini EV has increased pressure on domestic manufacturers to provide competitive, low-cost electric options.
