Electrica to Build Natural Gas Plant in Craiova

Electrica signed a contract to develop a high-efficiency natural gas cogeneration plant in Craiova, Romania, to replace coal-based heating for 53,000 households.

Electrica signed a contract to develop a high-efficiency natural gas cogeneration plant in Craiova, Romania, to replace the city's existing coal-based energy source. The new facility will supply thermal energy to the centralized district heating system, SACET, which serves approximately 53,000 households and public institutions, while simultaneously providing electricity to the National Power System.

The plant will feature an installed electrical capacity of approximately 82 MW and a thermal capacity of around 179 Gcal/h. To ensure long-term viability and grid stability, the unit is designed to be hydrogen-ready and includes black-start capabilities to assist in grid restoration following blackouts.

Implementation will occur in two phases, beginning with the installation of hot water boilers and concluding with the commissioning of cogeneration engines. This transition is intended to eliminate lignite combustion within the city, reducing local pollution and aligning Craiova's infrastructure with European standards.
