Major Platforms Block External AI Agents to Protect Business

Online aggregators and financial institutions are blocking third-party AI agents to prioritize internal ecosystems and mitigate liability risks.

Several dominant online platforms and financial institutions are restricting external artificial intelligence agents to protect their proprietary business models. According to a Bernstein research note published October 23, companies like Amazon.com Inc, Uber Technologies Inc, and DoorDash Inc may be justified in blocking third-party agents to maintain direct customer relationships and prioritize their own internal AI-powered experiences.

Amazon has already implemented blocks on external agents to favor its Alexa shopping ecosystem. Similarly, JPMorgan and Charles Schwab have restricted third-party AI agents, citing concerns over liability. These moves suggest that dominant platforms have little incentive to integrate competing AI services while they develop their own tools.

In contrast, Meta Platforms Inc has pursued an open integration strategy. Its Muse AI assistant reached 2.5 million daily active users in North America within six weeks of launch through partnerships with retailers such as Walmart Inc and Shopify Inc. While blocking external agents may offer short-term protection, analysts warn the strategy could become unsustainable if consumer behavior shifts permanently toward AI-driven transactions.
