Air India Appoints Tewolde Gebremariam as New CEO

Tewolde Gebremariam has been appointed as the chief executive officer of Air India Ltd. A veteran of the Ethiopian Airlines Group, Gebremariam takes over leadership of the Tata Group-owned carrier to stabilize international operations and reduce cash burn.

Gebremariam succeeds Campbell Wilson, who resigned in April after the airline reported record losses for the fiscal year ending March 31. The appointment comes as the company attempts to recover from a deadly plane crash last year while managing significant financial instability.

The new CEO faces immediate challenges including rising aviation fuel costs driven by war in the Middle East and unpredictable flight routings. He must manage airspace curbs involving India, Pakistan, and Iran that continue to impact operational efficiency.
