Microsoft Faces Margin Pressure Amid Massive AI Spending
Microsoft Corporation reports strong Azure growth and a $3.95 trillion valuation but faces margin contraction due to heavy AI infrastructure investments and declining consumer revenue.
The Microsoft Corporation enters its first-quarter earnings report with a $3.95 trillion valuation and a $678 billion commercial backlog. This position is supported by 43% growth in Azure, though the company is experiencing financial strain from aggressive AI infrastructure investments.
Capital expenditures reached $41 billion last quarter and are projected to exceed $50 billion per quarter in 2027. These costs, alongside compute-heavy workloads, caused a year-over-year gross margin contraction to 67%.
While cloud services remain strong, consumer divisions are struggling. The More Personal Computing segment declined 4% in the fourth quarter, highlighted by a 10% drop in Xbox gaming revenue and a 5% fall in Windows OEM revenue. Management expects high-teens revenue declines in Windows OEM and devices for 2027, citing global weakness in the PC market.
