Luzerne County Council Reviews Data Center Zoning Ordinance
Luzerne County Council will discuss a proposed zoning ordinance requiring special exception approval for all data center requests across 19 municipalities.
The Luzerne County Council is scheduled to review a proposed data center zoning ordinance during a work session on Tuesday, October 27, 2026. Recommended by the Luzerne County Planning Commission, the amendment would establish strict conditions for data center development and require special exception approval from the Luzerne County Zoning Hearing Board for all requests.
If approved, the ordinance will apply to 19 municipalities that rely on county zoning, including various townships and boroughs. Council Chairman Jimmy Sabatino stated the proposal will be reviewed in two separate work sessions to ensure the public and council members fully understand the measure.
Following the work session, the council will hold a voting meeting at 6 p.m. at the county courthouse in Wilkes-Barre. This session includes a 5:55 p.m. public hearing regarding a separate ordinance that would establish reporting requirements and parameters for future county real estate tax-break requests.
