India Becomes World Second-Largest Mobile Phone Manufacturer

India's electronics production grew six-fold over a decade, with mobile phone manufacturing rising 28-fold to reach Rs 5.45 lakh crore in FY25.

India's electronics manufacturing production reached approximately Rs 12 lakh crore in FY25, representing a six-fold increase from Rs 1.9 lakh crore in FY15. Jitin Prasada, the Union Minister of State for Electronics and IT, reported that mobile phone production specifically grew 28-fold to Rs 5.45 lakh crore, establishing India as the second-largest manufacturer of mobile phones globally.

This expansion is attributed to the Production-Linked Incentive scheme and the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision, which together generated 1.85 lakh direct jobs. Prasada noted that the broader sector supports around 12 lakh direct and indirect jobs.

The Semicon India Programme, established in January 2022, has approved 10 projects involving investment commitments of Rs 1.6 lakh crore. Commercial production has already begun at plants operated by Micron Technology and Kaynes Technology. To sustain this momentum, the Government of India proposed the India Semiconductor Mission 2.0 in the Union Budget 2026-27 to enhance supply chains and equipment manufacturing.
