Atiku Abubakar Selects Rotimi Amaechi as ADC Running Mate

Atiku Abubakar nominated Rotimi Amaechi as his vice-presidential candidate after Peter Obi's withdrawal left the African Democratic Congress struggling to fill a Southeast slot.

African Democratic Congress presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar nominated Rotimi Amaechi as his vice-presidential running mate for the 2027 general election. The selection followed the withdrawal of Peter Obi from the party's presidential race, which created a vacancy for a Southeast representative on the ticket.

Party spokesperson Kenneth Okonkwo explained that Obi's exit left the Southeast region disadvantaged and confused. While the party considered other prominent figures from the region, including Enyinnaya Abaribe and Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, legal constraints under the Electoral Act prevented their selection because they were not registered ADC members by the required deadline.

Okonkwo stated that Amaechi was chosen as the closest available option to the Southeast due to his Igbo extraction. Although he previously expressed concerns regarding geopolitical equity, Okonkwo confirmed his current support for the ticket, describing the party as one big and happy family.
