Ministry of Home Affairs Extends CAPF Deployment in Delhi

The Ministry of Home Affairs extended the deployment of 270 CAPF companies in Delhi until November 16 to manage political protests and festival crowds.

The Ministry of Home Affairs extended the deployment of 270 Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) companies in Delhi until November 16. This third extension follows a request from the Delhi Police to maintain order during the festival season and to manage the Chalo Dilli March, a rally organized by the Indian National Congress under the INDIA bloc banner. The march, protesting alleged vote chori, is scheduled to end at Ramlila Maidan on November 1.

The deployment includes personnel from the Central Reserve Police Force, Rapid Action Force, Border Security Force, Indo-Tibetan Border Police, Sashastra Seema Bal, and Central Industrial Security Force. These units were originally mobilized earlier this month to manage protests by the Cockroach Janta Party, which has been involved in massive demonstrations in Central Delhi since June-July 2026.

In response to these actions, former civil servant Ashish Joshi filed a Public Interest Litigation in the Delhi High Court seeking judicial scrutiny of the deployment. Joshi argues that the presence of CAPF does not authorize the dispersal of peaceful assemblies or the use of force without statutory compliance. The petition requests that the Ministry of Home Affairs and Delhi Police disclose security assessments and the specific reasons for repeated extensions on October 6, 8, 22, and 29. Joshi further asks the court to mandate that any deployment beyond November 16 be supported by a written, reasoned order.
