Prudential Survey Finds Retirees Fear Spending Savings
Prudential Financial reports that millions of American retirees avoid spending their savings due to fear of running out of money.
A survey by Prudential Financial reveals that millions of American retirees struggle to spend their savings because they fear financial depletion. The data indicates that 54% of retirees prioritize leaving an inheritance for heirs over their own spending, while 61% of those with at least $500,000 in investments feel uncomfortable spending for enjoyment.
This anxiety stems from the decline of traditional pensions and a shift toward self-managed accounts, such as 401(k)s and IRAs. These accounts require retirees to determine their own withdrawal rates while facing market volatility, inflation, and rising healthcare costs.
Financial expert Jean Chatzky advises retirees to shift their focus from account balances to generating a reliable monthly income stream, which she calls a "forever paycheck." She suggests using assets like dividend-paying stocks, annuities, and bonds to ensure financial security regardless of how long a retiree lives.
