Anambra State Demands Apology From Peter Obi Over Debt Claims
The Anambra State Government is demanding an apology from former Governor Peter Obi after alleging he left the state with $123.77 million in outstanding loans.
The Government of Anambra State has demanded an unreserved apology from Peter Obi, alleging that his administration left behind outstanding loans and liabilities totaling $123.77 million. Commissioner for Information and Value Reorientation Law Mefor stated that records indicate eight loans from the World Bank's International Development Association were contracted during Obi's tenure, with $92.35 million remaining outstanding as of June 30, 2026.
Peter Obi rejected the claims, arguing that the $123.77 million figure represents the combined contracted value of facilities rather than the actual debt outstanding when he left office in March 2014. Obi asserted that the external debt was approximately $30 million at the time of his departure.
A fact-check by Daily Trust found that while the specific March 2014 Debt Management Office record was unavailable, the closest record from December 2013 showed a debt of $30.32 million. This finding contradicts the state government's claim that $123.77 million was the outstanding debt inherited in 2014.
