Simple Mining LLC Seeks Permit for South Dakota Data Center

Simple Mining LLC has applied for a conditional use permit to operate a 10-megawatt cryptocurrency mining data center in Madison, South Dakota. The proposed facility would occupy 3.73 acres of city-owned land along SD-34 and feature four modular, liquid-cooled structures.

To mitigate power grid strain, the company proposed using interruptible power, which allows the city to divert electricity during emergencies. City administrator Jameson Berreth stated the project could increase city revenue and lower electricity rates for local residents. The facility would receive power through the City of Madison, purchased at open market rates from Heartland Energy Partners, LLC.

While the Board of Adjustment approved a conditional use permit and variance on September 15, the Madison City Commission took no action during its September 21 meeting. The commission will evaluate the project's lease and electric service agreements at future sessions. Local residents Michael and Dawn Johnson have expressed concerns that the facility's constant noise could negatively impact property values and livestock.
