Qatar Pursues Diplomatic De-escalation Amid U.S.-Iran Conflict

Qatar launched a series of diplomatic engagements on July 24 to address escalating regional tensions and strengthen international partnerships. In Doha, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, the Qatari Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, met with British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband to discuss regional de-escalation. The talks took place as the United States conducted attacks on Iranian targets and Iran responded by targeting U.S. bases and facilities.

During the meeting, Sheikh Mohammed urged all parties to prioritize diplomacy and honor the U.S.-Iran peace memorandum of understanding. He specifically emphasized the necessity of maintaining freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. The two officials also explored ways to deepen bilateral cooperation between Qatar and the United Kingdom.

Simultaneously, Qatari Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sultan bin Saad Al Muraikhi traveled to Manila for a commemorative event marking the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia. On the sidelines of the event, Al Muraikhi held separate meetings with Saudi Arabian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Waleed bin Abdulkarim Al-Khereiji and Bruneian Second Minister of Foreign Affairs Erywan Pehin Yusof to discuss strengthening bilateral ties and mutual interests.
