Cloudflare Launches Adaptive Intelligence to Automate Bot Defense

Cloudflare Inc. released Adaptive Intelligence, a detection engine that automatically generates and rotates blocking rules to counter evolving bot attacks in real time.

Cloudflare Inc. launched Adaptive Intelligence, a detection engine integrated into its Bot Management service that automatically writes and discards blocking rules during active attacks. The system trains on live network traffic to identify new bot frameworks and bypass techniques, creating short-lived, narrow rules that rotate frequently to prevent attackers from mapping defenses.

This approach targets the low cost of scaling modern attacks and the slow deployment cycles typical of conventional security tools. The engine analyzes behavior across multiple timeframes to detect slow-motion campaigns, including credential stuffing and scraping. To support this, the system utilizes Precursor, a browser-level tool that logs session-based visitor telemetry.

Chief Technology Officer Dane Knecht stated that building taller walls fails when the cost of scaling an attack is effectively zero. The service is currently available to Cloudflare Bot Management customers, though the company did not disclose pricing. WP Engine Inc. has already utilized Cloudflare's network to build its own Global Edge Security bot controls.
