Pritzker and Bailey Clash Over Farm Taxes in Illinois Forum

Governor J.B. Pritzker and Republican gubernatorial nominee Darren Bailey debated agricultural policy on August 11, 2026, at a forum hosted by the Illinois Agricultural Legislative Roundtable in Shirley, Illinois. While both candidates agreed on the necessity of reforming the state estate tax to help families preserve farmland, they differed on the scale of the solution. Pritzker advocated for the Family Farm Preservation Act to increase the estate tax credit from $4 million to $6 million, while Bailey pushed to match the federal exemption of $30 million.

The candidates further clashed over energy and trade. Bailey called for an end to the ban on new coal and natural gas plants, criticizing Pritzker's clean energy transition. Pritzker highlighted a soybean sales agreement with Indonesia and blamed the trade policies of Donald Trump for price hikes affecting farmers.

Republican U.S. Senate nominee Don Tracy also attended, proposing a modernized federal farm bill and permanent nationwide access to E15 gasoline. Tracy defended the use of tariffs as a tool to reset world trade policy and criticized Democratic nominee Juliana Stratton for her absence from the event, noting she was attending fundraisers in Massachusetts. Independent candidate Collin Corbett protested his exclusion from the forum, arguing that omitting independent voices denies voters a real choice.
