Oxfordshire County Council Refurbishes Rose Hill Roundabout Traffic Signals

Oxfordshire County Council began refurbishing the Rose Hill roundabout in Oxford on July 27, 2026. This project represents the first upgrade to the interchange since 1995 and is scheduled to last up to eight weeks. The works aim to reduce bus journey times and improve efficiency on the ring road through the installation of a new signal controller, replacement traffic signal poles, and an intelligent bus priority system. The council is also installing LED signal heads to lower power consumption and the site's carbon footprint.

Funded by a government grant exceeding £2.1 million from the Department for Transport as part of a bus service improvement plan, the project is being conducted overnight in two phases to minimize disruption for residents of Littlemore and Rose Hill.

Local officials expressed mixed reactions to the development. While some welcomed the investment in bus infrastructure and the reduction of driver confusion, Councillor David Henwood warned that the project highlights a significant traffic vulnerability. He noted that the lack of alternative routes means accidents on the ring road could collapse traffic flow and hinder emergency vehicle access, potentially putting residents at risk.
