Alphabet Overhauls Google DeepMind Leadership as Jeff Dean Departs
Alphabet Inc. restructured Google DeepMind leadership, moving Demis Hassabis to chairman and announcing the departure of AI strategist Jeff Dean to launch a startup.
Alphabet Inc. announced a leadership overhaul at Google DeepMind on Wednesday, triggering a share price decline of more than 5%. The restructuring centers on a transition for co-founder Demis Hassabis, who moved from his role as head of the AI research lab to a chairman position. Hassabis stated he decided it was the right time to hand over operational responsibilities to focus on the big picture and long-term strategy.
Koray Kavukcuoglu, Google's Chief AI Architect, assumed the operational duties of senior vice president and will now report directly to Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai. Concurrent with these changes, longtime AI strategist Jeff Dean departed the company to launch a startup. Dean is reportedly taking several high-profile employees with him as he exits the organization.
