Louisiana Approves Fast-Track Power Plants for Meta AI Data Center

The Louisiana Public Service Commission approved an expedited process for Entergy to build gas-fired power plants supporting Meta's $27 billion AI data center.

The Louisiana Public Service Commission voted 4-1 to grant Entergy Louisiana an expedited approval process to construct seven gas-fired power plants and transmission upgrades. The decision follows Governor Jeff Landry's Lightning Initiative, which allows the utility to bypass standard competitive bidding and regulatory hurdles to speed up infrastructure development.

The power project is designed to support Meta's $27 billion Hyperion AI data center in Richland Parish, intended to be the company's largest AI facility worldwide, as well as the Project Evest data center. The broader energy plan includes 10 gas-fired plants generating 7,400 megawatts, 2,500 megawatts of solar and wind energy, and nuclear site upgrades. Entergy estimates the total cost for generation and transmission at least $13 billion, asserting that existing customers will not subsidize the project.

Supporters, including Entergy CEO Phillip May, argue that the project will strengthen reliability and foster economic development in rural areas. However, the Alliance for Affordable Energy and the Union of Concerned Scientists opposed the fast-track decision, citing a lack of transparency in redacted filings and warning that the reliance on fossil fuels could increase electricity bills and NOx emissions for residents.
