First Ferrari Electric Vehicle Sells for Record $40 Million
Ferrari sold its first electric vehicle, the Luce Chassis 0, for a record $40 million at a charity auction during Monterey Car Week.
A one-of-a-kind Ferrari S.p.A. electric vehicle, the Tailor Made Luce known as Chassis 0, sold for a record-breaking $40 million at a charity auction during Monterey Car Week. The sale, conducted by RM Sotheby's, far exceeded the initial estimate of $1.1 million and surpassed the $34.6 million fetched by a 1996 McLaren F1 GTR.
Finished in an iridescent white called Madreperia, the Luce features a quad-motor powertrain producing 1,050 hp and a 0-60 mph acceleration time of 2.5 seconds. The model was designed in collaboration with Jony Ive's LoveFrom studio. While the vehicle's May unveiling initially triggered criticism and a decline in company share prices, the auction result indicates a shift in collector interest toward modern performance investments.
Ferrari will donate all proceeds from the sale to the Ferrari Foundation to fund global educational initiatives. Chief Executive Officer Benedetto Vigna noted that the Luce is attracting orders from both traditional and new customers.
