Nigerian Guild of Editors Demands Major Electoral Reforms

The Nigerian Guild of Editors calls for constitutional changes and stricter AI misinformation safeguards ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The Nigerian Guild of Editors demanded significant constitutional and electoral reforms following the 22nd All Nigeria Editors Conference held in Enugu from September 24 to 26, 2026. The organization proposed implementing a 50 percent vote threshold for presidential elections, which would necessitate a run-off if no candidate reaches the mark. The Guild also called for the resolution of all electoral disputes before winners are sworn into office and the legalization of independent candidacy.

Further recommendations include reforming the appointment process for the leadership of the Independent National Electoral Commission. The Guild emphasized the need for the commission to ensure the technical integrity of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System.

Addressing the 2027 general elections, the organization warned against the use of generative AI, voice cloning, and deepfakes to spread misinformation. It urged newsrooms to institutionalize fact-checking and adopt the Nigerian Media Code of Election Coverage. To combat terrorism propaganda, the Guild endorsed the "Inform, Don't Amplify" principle and advocated for increased protection for journalists during election cycles.
