AI Gains and Oil Volatility Drive Mixed Wall Street Session

U.S. stock indices ended the week with modest gains as AI sector optimism and falling oil prices offset rising Treasury yields and inflation fears.

U.S. stock markets experienced a volatile end to the week, with indices finishing mostly flat on Thursday before posting modest gains on Friday. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite recovered from early losses, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average saw a slight decline on Thursday and a recovery of between 155 and 221 points on Friday.

Market volatility was driven by a clash between geopolitical tensions and artificial intelligence optimism. Brent crude oil prices surged to $107.54 per barrel on Thursday but eased to approximately $99 per barrel by Friday. This shift followed reports that the Federal government of the United States and Iran are negotiating a phased agreement to end hostilities and reopen the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for eased economic sanctions.

Simultaneously, the AI sector provided a significant boost. Meta Platforms Incorporated saw gains driven by its Muse AI agent and Charm device, while Akamai Technologies surged following a $11.6 billion cloud services agreement with Anthropic. Costco Wholesale also climbed after reporting quarterly profits that exceeded analyst expectations.

These gains were tempered by hawkish signals from the Federal Reserve System and a University of Michigan report indicating consumers expect inflation to reach 4.6% next year. These factors pushed the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield to 5.20%, a level not seen since 2007, pressuring several high-growth stocks.
