Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing Visits Thailand for Legitimacy

Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing conducted a two-day official visit to Thailand ending August 8, 2026, as part of a diplomatic effort to secure regional legitimacy. During the visit, he met with Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and attended a Thailand-Myanmar Business Forum.

The two nations signed memorandums of understanding covering space technology, water quality management in shared rivers, and the status of Myanmar migrant workers. Min Aung Hlaing claimed his government is restoring stability and moving toward democracy, having assumed the presidency in April following elections that the UN and Western governments criticized as a sham.

While Thailand provided a high-profile reception, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations continues to bar Min Aung Hlaing from leaders' summits. The regional bloc demands progress on a previously agreed-upon peace plan as Myanmar remains embroiled in a brutal civil war and faces international sanctions over alleged human rights abuses.
