World Bank Raises Kenya 2026 Growth Forecast to 4.6%

The World Bank increased Kenya's 2026 growth forecast to 4.6% while urging the government to combat corruption costing the country 2% of its annual GDP.

The World Bank raised Kenya's economic growth forecast for 2026 to 4.6%, up from a previous estimate of 4.3%, citing a stronger-than-expected performance during the first half of the year.

In its latest Kenya Economic Update report, the lender warned that corruption and collusion cost the country an estimated 2% of its annual GDP. The bank noted that these governance challenges create a governance premium that increases the cost of sovereign borrowing and act as a key binding constraint on growth.

The Government of Kenya is responding to these vulnerabilities by signing a conflict of interest bill and implementing an electronic procurement platform. This follows a June draft report from the International Monetary Fund regarding corruption vulnerabilities.

Despite the upgraded growth outlook, the World Bank cautioned that the general election in August 2027 and potential fiscal slippage could increase spending pressures and economic uncertainty.
